So far, insufficient evidence exists to recommend community initiation of Kangaroo Mother Care, but now strong evidence supports the use of this care approach post-discharge to reduce both later mortality and also improve breastfeeding rates. Kangaroo Mother Care also lead to a 27 per cent increase in breastfeeding rates at 1 to 4 months after birth and increased breastfeeding duration. This care package in preterm neonates (2,000 gram birthweight) in hospitals is associated with reduced risk of neonatal mortality by 51 per cent, nosocomial infection or sepsis by 58%, hypothermia by 77 per cent and shorter length of hospital stay. According to the Lancet Newborn series published in 2014, Kangaroo Mother Care involves a package of early and continuous skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding support, early discharge from the hospital, and supportive care in stable neonates.
